Yesmin O'brien talks to Hair and Beauty Jobs
Yesmin O'Brien had planned for a career in fashion but after taking a summer job in a hair salon at the age of 19 she became hooked and has loved hairdressing ever since. She started with the seanhanna group 19 year's ago and her hard work and creative talent has certainly paid off.
Yesmin is currently Creative Director for seanhanna, based in Sutton with responsibilities for education.
Here she talks to Hair and Beauty Jobs about her passion for hairdressing and gives her advice for those wanting to embark on or further their career in this exciting industry.
Q. What attracted you to hairdessing?
Always interested in fashion, I had applied to start a BA Fashion Degree course, and while I was waiting for the course to begin, I took a job in a hair salon during the summer holidays. I enjoyed it so much that when September came, I decided to postpone the course for another year. That year never came! I was totally besotted with hairdressing and don't regret it for a minute.
Q. Why did you choose seanhanna?
I had finished my apprenticeship in a London salon, and decided I wanted to work nearer home in Surrey. I was careful to look around and find a reputable, established salon - I was attracted to the new seanhanna salon in Worcester Park. I loved those early days and enjoyed each new responsibility - soon, I was promoted to managing Sean's Epsom salon.
Q. What is your position and how long have you been with them?
I started with the seanhanna group 19 years ago! I have held several senior positions in various salons and am currently Creative Director, based in Sutton, with responsibilities for Education. I am also a shareholder of the seanhanna salon group.
Q. What are the qualities that make a good hairdresser?
I believe that good communication skills are vital to being a good hairdresser. I would say that before even learning any technical skills, you must first possess the ability and the inclination to communicate well with all types of people.
Q. What do you like best about hairdressing?
Everything! Its a really rewarding career and I enjoy it now even more than I did 19 years ago!
Q. What do you like least?
Honestly? Nothing! I really do love aspects of my work. I feel lucky to have a job with such a range of variety - from working in the salon with my clients, to educating the staff, to doing hair for catwalk shows and seminars, and producing my own collections for photographic work.
Q.What have you gained by working at seanhanna?
Working with seanhanna has given me the opportunity to combine my artistic skills with sound business skills. I have built up a very rewarding support with all my clients; have gained confidence in managing a team, and, best of all, have improved artistically.
Q. What is the high point of your career so far?
This week I learned that my latest photographic collection is through to the Finals of the British Hairdressing Awards. Putting a collection together and shooting gives me an incredible buzz but hearing that I had been selected for the Finals was very much a high point in my career!
Q. What are your aspirations?
To win more awards, to get to the highest level artistically that I can possibly achieve - and to go on enjoying every new challenge that my work inevitably brings me!
Q. What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in the hair industry?
Be passionate! Hairdressing can be what you want it to be! It will show in everything you do, and you will reap the benefits over and over.
