Hi, please can someone advise me on contra-indications?

I'm a fully qualified Beauty Therapist, and looking to start up on my own. The only problem I'm having is how to deal with contra-indications. I'm not talking about conditions such as impetigo, conjunctivitis, verrucas etc, it's medical problems that you can't actually see, like cancer, thyroid conditions, heart problems etc. Say if someone had high blood pressure and they came to you for an eyebrow or upper lip wax, would you still treat them or do you need a doctor's note? And if someone's had cancer in the past (like, 6 years ago or something) and isn't being treated for it anymore, (but taking medication) can you still give them treatments? And people with heart conditions etc, would you treat them for waxing? I'm stuck!

I must admit we didn't cover contra-indications very much at college, only contagious things like impetigo etc, so I'm a little unsure when and when I shouldn't treat someone who has a medical condition.

If anyone could give me a list or a link where I could find this information out I would be SOOO grateful.

Thank you! X

I have read your concern about contra indication relating to serious health conditions. There is no option but to create your own doctors referral asking; can MR/MRS X have the following treatments.....list them accordingly. Remember never to name a suspected contra indication unless the client tells you what they suffering with. Please take my advice because of insurance reasons because if you only think it could be ok to treat them, then they can sue you if anything goes wrong.
Hope this helps

Rethink your contra indications for each treatment and area.

High blood pressure isnt really an issue with eyebrow and lip waxing. i have been trained and working in industry for 12 yeasrs and have dealt with many conditions regarding treatments.
It is mostly common sense. Normally someone with high B>P has it controlled with medication so an eyebrow wax would be irrelevant really whereas body massage and high B.P then that is completely different, although i have massaged a client with H.B.P and all was well you just have to use confidence and common sense, and if in doubt have a pre prepared letter for GP referral eg

Mrs >>>>>> came for treatment and during consultation it was discovered that she had ......... which is contra-indicated because of ...... ( give the reason why ) In your professional capacity, would you consider it to be suitable that mrs ...undertakes the treatment.

Also explain to your client that most contra's are short term and once condition is under control or cleared then treatment can proceed.

The longer you are practising and the larger your client base becomes you will be confident enough to deal with any eventuality that comes through the door.

remember too your always learning,,,,

Rethink your contra indications for each treatment and area.

Create your own consultation form, asking the usual questions. Then at the end, ask 'Are you feeling fit and well and in good health?' Get them to sign underneath.

The shame is that regardless of illness, people want to get waxed and for the most part, it will do no harm at all. However, you must protect yourself and your client, so ask them to produce a docs letter which you should attach to their notes. xxx

yeh at college we have really in depth consultation cards so we know exactly what we are doing when we finish and get a job, where your contra indications are and medication if they say there fit and healthy make sure they sign underneath anyways just incase they are lyin as alot of people think its fine to have all these treatments and it wont affect their medication or condition. As we have found out when a girl lied and ended up having an epileptic fit on the bed.

hi becky,

the best thing to do is type out a waxing form questionnaire listing all the contra indications like the ones they teach you at college, ones you can and can not carry out and when they tick the relevant one then you can take it further if you like. the only contra indication really for waxing is any medicaton which thinnens the skin, diabetics and skin sensitivity. if you are really concerned ask them to bring a doctors note to you.

that way this form can be used to see for other treatments aswell.

always ask them to sign at the bootom of the sheet to cover yourself.

hope this helps.
