Hair and Beauty Jobs talks to the Principal of Brentwood College, Jacqui Borley.

Q. What inspired you to set up the Academy?

I had been working as a self employed therapist and decided that I wanted to venture into teaching beauty therapy. It was while I was studying for my teaching qualifications and working at two local colleges that I realised there was a 'gap' in the market for a private training school that could provide beauty and holistic training on a more personal basis.

This inspired me to set up the Brentwood Academy of Health and Beauty in 1998 along with the help of my husband who'd been in investment banking for 25 years.

Q. How are classes structured?

All courses at the Academy run on a part-time basis; day, evening or weekend allowing the student time for home study. The courses are structured to be professional, yet enjoyable to learn and students are taught in small groups (no more than ten in numbers) allowing for intensive training with support and guidance always at hand from an experienced team of tutors.

Q. What is the ethos behind the college?

Lecturers were employed not just for their industry and teaching qualifications but also for their caring personalities. The academy ethos of 'Learning in a caring, professional environment' is shared by all members of the team as we believe that encouraging and nurturing each student will enable them to fulfil their full potential as a professional therapist. Staff believe that it's not just the qualification that counts - it is the confidence and skills that go with it!

Q. What are your aspirations for the future?

Our aspirations would be to see standards raised in the industry as a whole to enable therapists to gain the recognition and acknowledgement that they deserve for a such a worthwhile and enjoyable career.
