My Experiences as a Hair Stylist with Steiner

Are you a passionate hair stylist a penchant for travel? Read on to see a real-life account of what it means to be a Steiner Stylist onboard a luxury Cruise Liner. We asked Donna Allen, UK Recruitment Manager for Steiner, to detail the highlights of life at sea, and her experience working as a former Hair Stylist for Steiner.

Name: Donna Allen
Country of Residence: UK
Age: 29
Profession: UK Recruitment Manager

What ship are you on/or have worked on?

I have worked on 14 different ships over a 6 year period. I worked for Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Holland America.

To list a few: Carnival Fantasy, Fascination, Pride, Victory, Freedom and Dream, Independence of the Seas, Noordam and Maasdam.

When did you join Steiner?

I joined Steiner in 2005 as a hairdresser and completed 9 contracts over 6 years. After the first 3 contracts I became a manager and managed for the last 3-4 years.

What was your experience of life onboard?

I had the most amazing time at sea. Firstly, I had the chance to see the world with my own eyes, but also for the experience. I developed so much as a hairdresser; you get to work with so many different hair types and personalities.  Every week you get to meet new clients. I never had time to get bored as things were always changing. It’s so different than working in a local salon seeing the same people every week. I grew a lot as a person and Stylist. I must say although it is extremely hard work, long days and busy columns it is well worth it, particularly when you have your day off on some exotic beach or shopping in New York.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of a career on Ships?

Don't think about it - just do it. It changed my life; I see things in a different light now. I have been given the chance to grow within the company; some take the experience and go on to open salons or work overseas. The opportunities are endless particularly for the right individual. It is the first step to the rest of your life and if you don't do it you have no idea what you're missing out on.

Favourite Day off?

Oh there are way too many to mention; Swimming with wild turtles bigger than me, in Barbados, jumping on the back of a camel in Africa, riding on a donkey up a mountain in Santorini and shopping in New York. I'd say one that really sticks out is the day I had a great lunch in Capri, a small island off Naples. It was the day I sat down looked out over the beautiful bay and realized how much I loved my job.

What do you feel you have a gained working for Steiner?

I have transformed as a person since working for Steiner. I used to be quiet and nervous as a person and a Stylist but now I am a strong ,confident and independent. My experience and skills that I gained working on board as a hairdresser and manager will stay with me for life.

What are you doing now?

I am now working for Steiner as a Recruitment Manager covering the South of England.  Now I get to inspire students at colleges to apply to work for Steiner and show them how amazing this experience really is.
