Tips and Tricks for Flawless Skin

I truly believe that great skin comes from within so the first step is to look at what you put in your body.

It really is essential to keep the body hydrated as this will really reflect in your skin too. The recommended daily intake of water is 8 x 200ml glasses a day for women or 1.6 litres a day and 10 x 200ml glasses or 2.0 litres a day for men. If you increase your intake to this level you will really see a significant change in your skin. It looks fresher, plumper and glows. It's a cheap and easy solution so anyone can do it, no excuses!

What you eat also affects your whole body including skin, try to keep to a well-balanced diet paying attention to fresh fruit and vegetables and try and keep the junk food and alcohol to a minimum; however there’s nothing wrong with a little treat occasionally!

One of the most damaging things you can do to your skin is smoke. Not only can this cause health risks to your body, the effects are clearly seen in your skin. The skin takes on a grey pallor, caused by the smoke, leaving it looking dull and sallow.

The skin around the eyes and lips can develop deep lines which are increased by the 'drawing action' when inhaling. It's impossible as a ‘make-up artist to not spot a smoker when you are making someone up, such is the impact on the skin. The skin also loses its elasticity at a faster rate which creates a sagging effect too. Not too many reasons to continue!

Lots of people ask if make-up is damaging to the skin. Does it block pores? Can it cause spots? I always say that it's only a problem is it's not removed thoroughly and left to build up on the skin so I encourage a thorough skincare routine.

CLEANSING

I use facial wipes in my kit as an emergency product and usually only to remove the make-up from my hands when I work! I personally don't find they remove all the make-up thoroughly. If you like using these I would recommend a wash off cleanser after to complete the job properly. One of my favourites is Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish. A plant based cleanser that removes all make-up including eye make-up. So simple to use, lather and massage onto the face and rinse off with the muslin cloth that also gently helps dislodge dead skin cells to leave the skin feeling really clean.

In my kit I use Bioderma Sensibio H2O - Micelle Solution which gently cleanses and is an ultra-mild, non-rinse micellar water cleanser and make-up remover. The cleanser removes impurities using micelles, which micro-emulsify impurities while maintaining the skin’s balance. This instantly leaves the skin feeling refreshed, cleansed and free from all make-up – including water resistant mascara.
As it doesn't need rinsing off it’s great on location where you don’t always have access to water. It’s also great for sensitive skin, so useful for using on many different skins.

TONING

If you use a cream cleanser toning will really help to make sure all the cleanser is removed too. I also use my toner as a refreshing spritz and like ESPA spafresh spritzer. Not only does it remove excess cleanser but it hydrates and balances the skin, smells gorgeous and leaves the skin feeling really fresh. It also comes in a hydrating formula for dry skin and balancing for combination/oily skin and contains natural essential oils and extracts.

MOISTURISING

My favourite choices of moisturiser for day contain an SPF; I always feel that this gives my skin an additional level of protection. I have been using the same day time moisturiser for years, Estée Lauder Daywear. It's got a lovely light, fresh scent and it's perfect to use under make-up as it's not too heavy and easily absorbed. It comes in lotion and cream so you can choose the texture dependent on your skin care.

In my pro kit I've become hooked on Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic cream; it instantly helps to transform skin to bright, glowing and hydrated, making it perfect as a base to a great make-up finish. It’s a blend of anti-aging ingredients, hyaluronic acid and floral extracts that lift and transform tired skin. Skin is left moisturised for an instantly glowing complexion.

I also like to use an additional product prior to make-up and that's a primer. Primers work by creating a smooth even base so that your make-up looks smoother, is easier to apply and also lasts longer.

I use different ones dependent on the skin I am working on but I really like primers that contain light diffusing ingredients to add a glow to the skin. Some of my favourites are LOLA Illuminating Base which features light-diffusing diamond core powder and micro mineral pearls which visibly even out skin tone and improve skin texture by deflecting light, giving skin radiance and a natural glow

And I'm also using Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow which does just that by greasing a gorgeous soft glow to the skin. It’s light diffusing and gives skin luminosity to disguise and transform dull, tired skin and soft focus lines. It can be used underneath my foundation or on its own for a dewy look.

Once you have created that perfect skin you will find it so much easier to apply make-up, you will see how much quicker it is to blend and you also use much less as the skin looks so good you won't want or need to hide it under thick layers of foundation.

When you have great skin to work with it's a great canvas to create stunning looks and also practice techniques such as contouring and highlighting. These involve using darker and lighter toned products to change the shape of the face. These techniques may use different foundation colours, or specifically designed highlighters and contouring products which can be crème or powder based.

If the skin isn't smooth or well-cared for these products will only draw attention to problem areas particularly highlighters which will do just that and highlight bad skin not great features.

As a make-up artist it's really important to understand the skin, how to care for it and how it contributes to your make up. If you can offer advice, tips and techniques it will not only help your job as a make-up artist by ensuring that your make up looks the best it can on your client but will give them confidence in your expertise and great skin too!
