British make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury boasts star-studded clientele including Kate Moss, Cara Delevigne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sienna Miller, and if that’s not enough, she’s also the owner of the phenomenally successful Charlotte Tilbury make-up line.
Born in London, Tilbury trained at the Glauca Rossi School of Make-up and began her career as an assistant to family friend and make-up artist mentor Mary Greenwell, whom she met when she was 11. Making connections in the industry, she went on to work with photographers such as Mario Testino and Mert and Marcus on editorial campaigns for top magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and LOVE.
In 2012, Tilbury launched a YouTube channel which has had more than 27 million views. The channel features expert tutorials to help regular women achieve high-end makeup looks. Tutorials include topics like ‘How to get a signature smokey-eyed seductive look’ and ‘How to get a naturally beautiful date look’. In interviews, Tilbury has described the motivation behind her channel as being to “democratize make-up”.
Tilbury launched her Charlotte Tilbury makeup line in 2013, which has garnered more than 80 awards globally. The range includes sell-out products such as ‘Charlotte’s Magic Cream’ moisturizer which she is said to have originally developed to use backstage on models and celebrities. Tilbury says the goal behind her make-up ranges is to “innovate not intimidate” and she demonstrates how to use her line to create specific looks on her YouTube channel. Eye shadow palettes are even laid out in the order in which the colours ought to be used, making application as easy as possible. An inspirational make-up artist and smart business woman, Tilbury is just as big a hit with Hollywood’s elite as she is with the everyday woman.
A pioneer of one of the most iconic make-up looks of the 21st century, make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic is the man behind Kim Kardashian’s facial contouring.
The 33-year-old Albanian-American began working at New York beauty store Sephora as a perfume consultant when he was 17. However, he quickly realised the world of fragrance was not for him and made a life-changing switch over to make-up, fast becoming an expert.
Dedivanovic scored his big break at 24, when he was booked to do the makeup for a cover shoot with US magazine Social Life featuring up-and-coming reality TV star Kim Kardashian. The pair became good friends and Kim stayed loyal to Dedivanovic throughout her astronomic rise to global super-stardom.
Over the years, Dedivanovic and Kim have built a trusting relationship, with the reality star allowing her make-up artist to experiment and pioneer new looks on her face, safe in the knowledge that he knows what suits her. As a result, Dedivanovic developed contouring, which he calls “a diet for the face”. The look is now a global beauty trend and has sparked countless spin-off contouring palettes and products.
Contouring (if you don’t already know), involves applying dark powder to create the illusion of shadows under the chin and cheekbones, and along the sides of the nose, to sharpen features. The look is accentuated with highlighter, which is added to the areas where light would be expected to fall, such as the cheekbones and bridge of the nose.

A global brand ambassador and YouTube sensation, not to mention a New York Times bestselling author, Lisa Eldridge is undoubtedly one of the most successful make-up artists of her generation.
Eldridge, who is 42, trained in photographic make-up before signing with a make-up agency. Getting booked to do the make-up of supermodel Cindy Crawford for a shoot with ELLE magazine proved to be a major turning point for Eldridge as the pair continued to work together over the years, raising Eldridge’s profile and helping her develop a solid reputation in the industry. Eldridge went on to work on leading fashion campaigns for magazines such as Vogue, LOVE magazine, Allure, Glamour, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Pop and i-D.
A respected industry consultant, Eldridge was hired by Japanese make-up and skincare company Shiseido in 1998 to create a brand new make-up range for the Asian market. She then spent ten years as Creative Director for Boots No7 and is now Global Creative Director at Lancôme, working across product development, advertising campaigns and digital strategy. And if that’s not enough, Eldridge published bestseller Face Paint: The Story of Makeup in 2015.
Recognisable from TV, Eldridge is the resident beauty expert on Channel 4 TV series Ten Years Younger. She also has a popular YouTube make-up channel, which has had more than 140 million views. In her tutorials, Eldridge often demonstrates looks on her celebrity clients, including Alexa Chung and Sophie Dahl. With her personable manner and industry expertise, it’s no surprise Eldridge is a big name in the make-up industry.
Despite being named by Vogue as the most influential make-up artist in the world, Pat McGrath had an unusual path into the industry.
Raised in Northampton by a single mother who had emigrated from Jamaica, Pat McGrath had no formal training in fashion and make-up and was simply inspired by the glamour she saw in movies. After completing an art foundation course at Northampton college, McGrath went to work in London at i-D magazine where she proved a vital force, bringing fresh new ideas to the stale 1990s grunge scene at the time.
McGrath spearheaded a new bright, popping use of colour in the magazine’s editorial shoots, which helped i-D gain international recognition and in turn, kick-started McGrath’s career. Over the years, McGrath developed as a makeup artist and grew increasingly experimental. She has worked with designers such as Jil Sander and John Galliano and became known for experimental looks such as latex petals stuck to faces, bodies drenched in powder paint and vinyl lips.
In 2015, McGrath launched her own makeup-line, Pat McGrath Labs, sold exclusively through her website. The range kicked off with innovative eyeshadow Gold 001, an eye-catching formula which comes with a spatula and mixing liquid and is worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian. Sephora has now started carrying the range, taking it to the mainstream.
Securing royal approval, McGrath was named an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list in 2013 in acknowledgement of her innovative and game-changing contribution to makeup artistry.
A truly modern make-up artist, Wayne Goss is not only a social media sensation but a hugely successful entrepreneur.
Born in Somerset in 1978, Goss became interested in make-up after developing acne as a teen. He originally developed his skills by reading books on the craft, but went on to train professionally in London before working as a freelance makeup artist and developing a loyal client base.
Harnessing the power of social media, Goss began his YouTube channel ‘Gossmakeupartist’ in 2009. Setting himself apart from the crowd, Goss’ tutorials show viewers how they can tailor their make-up application according to their individual face shape and features. Goss’ simple and easy-to-follow makeup videos have proved a huge hit, with his channel gaining nearly 360 million views. Goss’ video ‘How to contour and highlight like Kim Kardashian’ has had more than 11 million views alone. On the back of his success, Goss also launched a coveted make-up brush line in 2013.
